On this page the MDRS provides information about events in the region. Updates are made at the time of our newsletter mailings in February, May, and September.

 

 

 

Summer activities of our members:

 

Rod Ackmann, assistant professor of bassoon at the University of Missouri—Columbia, will perform a solo recital at the IDRS Conference in July at Brigham Young University.  Works included on his program are the Bertoli Sonata Prima, Ray Luke Contrasts and the Miroshnikov Scherzo.  In June he will return to teach and perform at the Oklahoma Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain.  In early July, he will travel to Assisi, Italy to perform solo and chamber music at Musica Assisi.

 

Nicolasa Kuster will be leaving Wichita State University and starting a new job at the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music in Stockton, CA.  This summer she will be on the faculty of the Sequoia Chamber Music Workshop at Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA from June 15-28, then she will perform as principal bassoon at the New Hampshire Music Festival in Plymouth, NH.  She will return to Wichita in November to perform the Mozart Bassoon Concerto with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra.

 

Marita Abner will join the faculty of the Summer Bassoon Extravaganza directed by Shelly Unger and held at Emory University.  The week-long program, for students grades 7-12 as well as developing adult players, features bassoon and contrabassoon master classes, reed making instruction, bassoon ensembles, and bassoon choir.  Other faculty and guest artists include Shelly Unger, Michael Dicker, Roger Soren, William Davis, the bassoon section of the Atlanta Symphony, and Jennifer Brinson.  Dates are June 22-28. University of Missouri—Kansas City master’s candidate Leia Barrett will return to Waterloo, Ontario this summer to participate in Windfest, a program dedicated to the woodwind octet repertoire and to individual lessons.

 

Eric Stomberg, bassoon professor at the University of Kansas, will spend the first week of June teaching and performing at University of Costa Rica inSan Jose, Costa Rica.

 

Ben Baer, (M.M. student, University of Kansas) has been accepted to the 2008 Bassoon Master Class Program and the Opera and Concert Orchestra Residency at the Banff Centre in Canada.

 

Ryan Fessinger, (BM student, University of Kansas) has been accepted to the 2009 Hot Springs Music Festival.

 

MO'BOES, a double reed trio made up of MDRS members Andrew Brown, Karl Hayes and Sheri Mattson, will perform at the IDRS Convention this July at Brigham Young University.  Included on the program will be:  4.5 Moods of a Forgetful People by Karl Hayes, for Oboe, Oboe d’Amore and English horn; Capriccio for Three Oboes, by Carlo Yvon; and Two Pieces for two oboes and English horn, by Gordon Jacob.

 

Margaret Marco will be performing at the IDRS Conference in Provo, Utah on July 22.  She will play solo oboe d'amore pieces by Koechlin and John Stevens and pieces for oboe and percussion by Wilder and Vietnamese composer Do Hong Quan.  Margaret has also been selected as the new coordinator of the Fernand Gillet Oboe Competition.

 

Katie Phillips, sophomore music major at the University of Kansas, was accepted to attend Idyllwild Summer Arts Program where she will perform and study with Nancy Ambrose King.

 

The Washburn University Faculty Woodwind Trio will have a busy summer with a variety of concerts!  The group features flutist Rebecca Meador, clarinetist Kirt Saville and bassoonist Kim Krutz.  They will be performing during Clarinetfest, held at the University of Missouri–Kansas City 2-6, 2008, and were also selected to perform a recital at the IDRS Conference in Provo, Utah.  The performance will be at 1:30 P.M. July 22, 2008 in the deJong Concert Hall on the Brigham Young University campus.  If you are attending the conference, please come support one of your MDRS colleagues!  Bassoonist Kim Krutz will also play with flute choir during the National Flute Association Conference held in Kansas City in August.

 

Natalie Moreland, Washburn University bassoonist, has scheduled her senior bassoon recital for Saturday, September 20, 2008.  She performs at 3:00 P.M. in White Concert Hall on the Washburn Campus.  The concert will feature works of Weber, Telemann, and Bozza and is free and open to the public.  Natalie studies with Kim Krutz.
