Emily Helvering teaches applied oboe at the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh. She holds degrees from Arkansas State University (B.M. 1996), Baylor University (M.M. 1998), and The University of Iowa (D.M.A. 2002) where her primary teachers were Dr. Dan Ross, Dr. Doris DeLoach, and Mr. Mark Weiger, respectively. Dr. Helvering’s doctoral research focused on oboe pedagogy, resulting in her D.M.A. essay entitled “A Survey and Analysis of Pedagogical Writings on the Oboe from American Journals.” Her previous academic appointments include positions at Coe College, Grinnell College, and Kirkwood Community College.


Dr. Helvering performs actively, primarily in Wisconsin and Iowa. She is a member of the Water City Chamber Orchestra, the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, and the Wisconsin Symphonic Winds. She has performed with other orchestras including the Green Bay Symphony, Fox Valley Symphony, and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. She has presented solo recitals, often coupled with master classes, at several colleges including Coe College, Grinnell College, Lawrence University, the University of Kansas, University of Missouri—Columbia, and Washburn University. As a soloist, she has performed the Goossens Oboe Concerto with the Bay View Chamber Orchestra, the Villa Lobos Concerto Grosso with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, Quiet City with the Coe College Symphony, and was featured in a lecture recital on Bach and the oboe d’amore with the Coe College Baroque Chamber Ensemble. She has also performed and presented at the International Double Reed Society conference and the Midwest Double Reed Society Double Reed Festival.
