Guide to purchasing recordings:

Music samplers are great for figuring out your tastes in music, but they often (not always) contain lesser quality performances.  Though it is now possible to listen to portions of a CD at the music store, we must still sometimes buy recordings that we have never heard.  To make an educated guess about the quality of a recording consider the following factors:  ensemble or artists, label (Telarc, EMI, Decca, etc.), and price.  Checking out recordings from a library will help you to define your tastes in ensembles and labels, and usually the higher the price, the better the recording.  Re-released material, however, (an older recording issued again, usually in a new format) is cost effective for the label and typically gives the consumer a great recording at a lower price.

It is still worth the money to purchase real compact discs rather than downloading digital versions.  If you use any sort of compression to store the downloaded material, there will be a noticeable difference in quality between the downloaded songs and CDs.
