Guide to purchasing recordings:

For digital downloads, here are some sites that cater to Classical music and therefore provde more complete and pertient information on the music being sold:

ClassicsOnline (run by Naxos)

Classical Archives

Passionato

It is often still worth the money to purchase real compact discs rather than downloading digital versions. If you use any sort of compression to store the downloaded material, there will be a noticeable difference in quality between the downloaded songs and CDs. Though it is now possible to listen to portions of a CD at the music store, we must still sometimes buy recordings that we have never heard.  To make an educated guess about the quality of a recording consider the following factors:  the ensemble or artists, the label (Telarc, EMI, Decca, etc.), and the price.  Usually the higher the price, the better the recording.  Re-released material, however, (an older recording issued again, usually in a new format) is cost effective for the label and typically gives the consumer a great recording at a lower price.

Checking out recordings from a library may be the best way to identify your tastes in ensembles and labels.
