Dr. Nora Lewis with the winners of the 2011 Young Artist Competition.

The Twenty-Fourth Annual Midwest Double Reed Society’s Young Artist Competition took place in Manhattan, Kansas on April 10, 2011 and was hosted by Kansas State University. High school and college-level oboists and bassoonists competed for cash prizes and certificates. Mark Chudnow Woodwinds, Carlos Coehlo Woodwinds, Eble Music, TrevCo Music, and Weber Reeds sponsored the awards, and their generous contributions made the cash prizes possible.

The competition was adjudicated by Dr. Heather Armstrong from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, Dr. Emily Helvering from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, Dr. Sheri Mattson from the University of Central Missouri, Leigh Miller Muñoz a doctoral student at the University of Kansas, and Kay Werth from Fort Hays State University in Kansas. The adjudicators also wrote individual comments, which were given to each participant following the competition.

Following the competition, all of the winners were featured in a recital. The recital was accompanied by pianists Rebecca Springstead, Tyler Tobald, and Yanen Wen. Congratulations to everyone who participated, and special thanks to the performers, judges, student volunteers, sponsors, and Midwest Double Reed Society for such a great event.
